Sea Kelp – 18-0529 TCX

Pomegranate rind + Iron mordant

A. Cotton Dyeing Procedure (Sea Kelp)

Step 1: Mordanting

  • Material: 100 g cotton
  • Mordant: Ferrous sulfate 5% owf (5 g)
  • Water: 2 L (M:L 1:20)
  • pH: Neutral (~6)
  • Temperature: 55°C
  • Time: 45 min

Process:

  1. Dissolve 5 g ferrous sulfate in 2 L warm water at 55°C.
  2. Add pre-wetted cotton fabric, stir gently for 45 minutes to ensure mordant binds cellulose fibers.
  3. Rinse lightly in cool water to remove excess mordant.

Reason: Iron mordant is critical for olive tones; cotton requires mordant uptake before dyeing.

Step 2: Dye Extraction & Dyeing

  • Dye: Pomegranate rind powder 15% owf (15 g)
  • Water: 2 L
  • Temperature: 70°C
  • Time: 60 minutes
  • pH: Slightly acidic 5.5-6

Process:

  1. Boil water and add pomegranate rind powder, simmer for 45 minutes to extract dye.
  2. Strain to remove solids.
  3. Cool to 65-70°C and add mordanted cotton.
  4. Maintain temperature, stir gently for 60 minutes.
  5. Remove fabric, rinse in cold water, dry in shade.

Reason: Pomegranate tannins develop well at slightly acidic pH and warm temps; iron mordant interaction produces olive-green hues.

B. Silk Dyeing Procedure (Sea Kelp)

Step 1: Mordanting

  • Material: 100 g silk
  • Mordant: Ferrous sulfate 5% owf (5 g)
  • Water: 2 L (M:L 1:20)
  • Temperature: 50°C
  • Time: 30 min

Process:

  1. Dissolve mordant at 50°C; add silk fabric, gently stir for 30 min.
  2. Remove silk, rinse lightly.

Step 2: Dyeing

  • Dye: Pomegranate rind 10% owf (10 g)
  • Water: 2 L
  • Temperature: 60°C
  • Time: 45 min
  • pH: Slightly acidic 5.5-6

Process:

  1. Simmer pomegranate rind for 30 min, strain.
  2. Cool dye bath to 60°C, add silk fabric, stir gently for 45 min.
  3. Remove, rinse cold, dry in shade.

C. Wool Dyeing Procedure (Sea Kelp)

Step 1: Mordanting

  • Material: 100 g wool
  • Mordant: Ferrous sulfate 5% owf (5 g)
  • Water: 2 L
  • Temperature: 50°C
  • Time: 30 min

Process:

  1. Mordant wool gently at 50°C, 30 min, rinse well.

Step 2: Dyeing

  • Dye: Pomegranate rind 12% owf (12 g)
  • Water: 2 L
  • Temperature: 60°C
  • Time: 45 min
  • pH: Slightly acidic 5.5

Process:

  1. Extract dye from pomegranate rind.
  2. Dye wool at 60°C for 45 min.
  3. Rinse cold, dry flat in shade.
